Here are some ideas around what to do with the tools that have been used in Schoology up to this point.</span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-8e988d17-7fff-546c-c721-80d52a6eb08c"><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Upd</span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: 700; white-space: pre-wrap;">ates</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Continue to post Updates in the Schoology Course. Kids and parents are used to checking there for new course information, as well as refer back for information that was previously posted. Notifications will continue to push out to individuals who are utilizing the Updates feature.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Materials</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Continue to add materials to Schoology, even if they are not digital. Kids and parents are used to checking Schoology for informational materials and assignments. If you are doing an in-class or paper assignment, continue to add it to the course materials but turn off digital submissions to avoid confusion. This will allow all assignments to show up on the calendar and in the gradebook. Remember, quarantines and absences will still occur, so having things in one place will be helpful even when we are together. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Gradebook</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Continue to use the Schoology gradebook for reporting student progress for all assignments associated with a course. Students and parents are used to checking the Schoology gradebook for up to date progress reports. Continue to sync the gradebook with PowerSchool for the official grade report. Having the same score reported in both Schoology and PowerSchool will avoid confusion.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Discussions</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">While face to face discussions can now take place, continue to offer opportunities for online discussions. Giving kids a place to be in discussion with other students with the freedom to give thought to what they are posting can still offer a great place for learning.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Workload planning</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">With everyone back in person, ensure that the due dates are dispersed in a manageable amount for students by checking the Workload Planning feature. Keep them established, as removing cohorts will alter past assignments that used the "individually assign" feature. When kids are all together, just don't use the cohorts that were created. Feel free to add Grading Groups if the situation calls for it. This can help in individualizing instruction as needed for any gaps that exist from the differences in Cohort attendance. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Folder structure</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Continue to use whatever basic folder structure that has been used up to this point in order to keep consistency. This is great, but as educators, there are some factors that need to be taken into account before jumping into this week's fad program.<br />
<div>
<img src="https://media1.giphy.com/media/unBelivpAG5Ta/200.gif?cid=5a38a5a2a7b82c8af8da9e42525e6e92d733fb317c14b261&rid=200.gif" style="border: 0px; height: 204px; width: 300px;" /><div>
<br /></div>
</div>
Federal Regulations for children and technology:<br />
There are three laws that govern what schools can do with students and technology. Most companies in the ed-tech sphere abide by these laws, but there are sometimes differences between free and paid versions that can be a liability for teachers. The three laws that we need to follow are:<br />
<br />
1. COPPA: The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act prevents websites and online programs from being specifically marketed to those under 13 without parental consent. This law doesn't necessarily apply to programs that are marketed toward adults (ex. Zoom) Essentially, students who are under 13 cannot use programs that are not designated for their use.<br />
2. CIPA: The Children's Internet Protection Act requires schools and districts to provide measures that help protect student safety online including education, filtering, and other measures. This is why YouTube has been blocked for elementary students and our internet filters are in place.<br />
3 . FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects student privacy and bars the unauthorized release of student information. This can become an issue when sites are offered for free. Often, free apps make money through advertising revenue or data mining. When students are logged into a site, particularly one that is handling personal information, images, or other data, this data may be fair game for the site to mine and sell to third parties.<br />
<div>
<img src="https://media2.giphy.com/media/26AHteTfafcdKC6ys/200.gif?cid=5a38a5a23292d74ffffa146c6b51151baae1ead1994e282a&rid=200.gif" style="border: 0; height: 168px; width: 300px;" /><div>
<br /></div>
</div>
For this reason, we implore you to wait on adopting a program immediately. Instead think it through using these steps:<br />
<span style="color: red;">1. Do we have something that accomplishes this goal already?</span> If we do, it is best to minimize both data risks, liability, and more practically, the number of sites students need to figure out and learn.<br />
<span style="color: red;">2. Have you read the privacy policy?</span> If not, take a look. They detail how a site uses everything from what your camera sees (if used with the site/app) to what hardware or software you have on your computer and everything in between. Much of this may be personal data we don't want to encourage students to share if we can avoid it.<br />
<span style="color: red;">3. Who is the original intended end user? </span>Companies that are oriented toward the education sector typically have specific polices that address each of the laws above and specify their adherence toward them in plain language (as required by COPPA). If the end user is intended as a corporate user, the policies may be harder to find or non-existent.<br />

Google Cast for Education is a Google Extension that WCS has added to all teacher accounts which allows a teacher to "cast" their Chromebook screen (or any device running Chrome) to another device running Chrome!<br />
<br />
Since our desktop computers are attached to projectors or TVs, you can show the room what is on your Chromebook while staying in the front of the room or as you walk around!<br />

You are taking down posters and cleaning up your room, but what about your tech? There are a number of housekeeping things you can do now so that your classroom tech isn't a mess when you return in the fall.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Clean up your Google Account:</b><br />
- Does your inbox make you cringe? you can <a href="https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6576?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en">archive</a> and<a href="https://support.google.com/mail/answer/118708?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en"> label</a> your mail so that it is organized, but not cluttering your inbox. Nothing is deleted in this process, but you can put it out of sight until it is needed later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-197AdfwkG2I/XNsAp5G8bBI/AAAAAAAAE_A/Ll-nqYH0AdwBWOO5lpb83_43gFGHIRiYgCLcBGAs/s1600/total-inbox-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="433" data-original-width="670" height="206" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-197AdfwkG2I/XNsAp5G8bBI/AAAAAAAAE_A/Ll-nqYH0AdwBWOO5lpb83_43gFGHIRiYgCLcBGAs/s320/total-inbox-1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
- Clean up your Drive:<br />
Now is a great time to take a look at your files in Drive. Do you add files to the main screen every time you start a Google doc? Are there 47 Untitled Documents that are sitting with no text in them? Delete what you don't need, and create files for the rest that organize what you have in a simple way for you. You can even color code your files!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EAzjEjWi3FE/XNsB5f32nnI/AAAAAAAAE_M/yH5zrirqMP8Y8QXhWBbomOLlThHP0FqCgCLcBGAs/s1600/configire-google-drive-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1141" data-original-width="1600" height="228" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EAzjEjWi3FE/XNsB5f32nnI/AAAAAAAAE_M/yH5zrirqMP8Y8QXhWBbomOLlThHP0FqCgCLcBGAs/s320/configire-google-drive-1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>2. Take a look at Schoology: </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Your current courses in Schoology are archived each summer. You still have access to them, but will need to search for them in the archived courses area. Instead of digging through old classes, this is a great time to save the materials you want to your resources.<a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201001233-My-Resources-Students-"> You can create files and organize any assignments, etc. in your resources</a> so they can be easily added to next years classes saving you work and time! To do this: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. find a folder, file, or other item in a Schoology course</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Click the gear icon</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. choose "Save to Resources"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Click the Resources tab at the top of the page and your selected files will now be in your Resources. Clicking the gear here will allow you to "add to course", move files, and reorganize to better meet the needs of next year's students. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Do you have a team you teach with? You can even create/share resources with the group by creating a Group within Schoology resources. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubn9Z2Puzlc/XNsEaceoawI/AAAAAAAAE_Y/Ai5zePMUV_EYbJQKv3OZl9IssKEpnzrngCLcBGAs/s1600/Resources%2B%25281%2529.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="515" data-original-width="1016" height="162" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubn9Z2Puzlc/XNsEaceoawI/AAAAAAAAE_Y/Ai5zePMUV_EYbJQKv3OZl9IssKEpnzrngCLcBGAs/s320/Resources%2B%25281%2529.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>3. I'm Leaving Now:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Are you leaving for a new job/ graduating/ retiring? You can take the contents of your Google account with you. Use <a href="https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout">Google Takeout</a>. This program allows you to choose the areas of your account you want to take with you and export the data to another account. It is a great way to retain access to any important items you have, portfolios to show prospective employers, things to hang on the fridge, etc. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Not that kind of Gale</div>
<br /></div>
GALE has created a series of resources that are available for teachers and students to use for research and lesson planning. These resources have been made available through Schoology to make it easier to incorporate them into assignments and student work without needing to login. <span id="docs-internal-guid-8bbac7a0-7fff-77dc-1923-9f90eaaf7efe"></span><br />
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span id="docs-internal-guid-8bbac7a0-7fff-77dc-1923-9f90eaaf7efe"><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Gale is "deeply integrated" which means any article can be pulled into an assignment, discussion, etc. from within Schoology itself. </span></span></div>
<span id="docs-internal-guid-8bbac7a0-7fff-77dc-1923-9f90eaaf7efe">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">3. This will open the database within the assignment window. Find the article that you would like to include</span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">4. When you find the article, look at the right menu bar. There are two options for including the article: embed or link. Embed will put the article inside the assignment window and give all Gale's tools to students within Schoology. Link will open Gale in a separate window</span></div>
<br /><div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyKZD2XwUmI/XKOMPVjU9xI/AAAAAAAABOw/7gnmKYs5OM4VD5N2FE7p70sR_k4RGIPZgCLcBGAs/s1600/33.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="168" data-original-width="1288" height="50" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyKZD2XwUmI/XKOMPVjU9xI/AAAAAAAABOw/7gnmKYs5OM4VD5N2FE7p70sR_k4RGIPZgCLcBGAs/s400/33.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
We've talked about reflecting on instructional practices using the <a href="http://www.schrockguide.net/samr.html" target="_blank">SAMR</a> model for a while now. While higher level tech integration in classrooms is great, sometimes simple tasks still need to be completed. While worksheets can serve a purpose in a classroom, when we switch to a digital version for submission, we might want to take a look at the formatting when we do. A few simple conversions will make a lot of difference!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9C3wYXuawhA/XKOJdzEnTpI/AAAAAAAABOM/rZvLNkkprLMDqgoB1MH_1bPYKccNtkAbgCLcBGAs/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="550" data-original-width="425" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9C3wYXuawhA/XKOJdzEnTpI/AAAAAAAABOM/rZvLNkkprLMDqgoB1MH_1bPYKccNtkAbgCLcBGAs/s320/2.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
When worksheets were on paper, there was a need for lines to be present so students could respond to questions. Physical space had to be included in the original so that students could add to the worksheet.<br />
<br />
1. Answer the question below:<br />
<br />
__________________________________________________________<br />
<br />
__________________________________________________________<br />
<br />
__________________________________________________________<br />
<br />
However, in a digital world, these worksheets can be manipulated after they have been assigned to offer the space needed for students to submit their work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DmQDyakMEKw/XKOJtwCYCYI/AAAAAAAABOQ/f5R_IOL67nA3TXxbRVObYE4s__VXBTMNgCLcBGAs/s1600/3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="395" data-original-width="640" height="246" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DmQDyakMEKw/XKOJtwCYCYI/AAAAAAAABOQ/f5R_IOL67nA3TXxbRVObYE4s__VXBTMNgCLcBGAs/s400/3.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Using <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/115008543287-Using-the-Google-Drive-Assignments-App" target="_blank">Schoology's Google Drive Assignments</a>, teachers can create templates for students to add their own responses. These worksheets work just like their paper counterpart, however, students have the ability to format the document as they respond. This means that the lines that we used to include for handwritten responses are no longer needed. Instead, create spaces for students to respond digitally!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p-JAePTqyLU/XKOLKbWZ3AI/AAAAAAAABOk/WLJ7KSIt_Joz-I6LGMxzjsxeSS3YK6nvwCLcBGAs/s1600/22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1237" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p-JAePTqyLU/XKOLKbWZ3AI/AAAAAAAABOk/WLJ7KSIt_Joz-I6LGMxzjsxeSS3YK6nvwCLcBGAs/s640/22.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using Google Drive Assignments creates a copy of the document, adds the student's name to the title, and time stamps when it is submitted. Therefore, there is no longer a need to have a placeholder for the name, date, or eventual student work. These are all added after the work has been assigned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k9Mlk6lQBIs/XKOM1JErEeI/AAAAAAAABO8/00-wuyB-DHE5MAczVChGNHANEuyBFsRcgCLcBGAs/s1600/1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="251" data-original-width="400" height="250" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k9Mlk6lQBIs/XKOM1JErEeI/AAAAAAAABO8/00-wuyB-DHE5MAczVChGNHANEuyBFsRcgCLcBGAs/s400/1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kids will then be able to open the document right in Schoology and add their responses in the appropriate spaces, then hit the submit button. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
[read more about Google Drive Assignments on Schoology's Blog <a href="https://www.schoology.com/blog/5-smart-uses-schoology%E2%80%99s-google-drive-assignments-app" target="_blank">here</a>!]</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With a little manipulation, teachers can use the worksheets that they have created over the years in the digital space that kids are becoming more and more accustomed to. </div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
This week the Ed Tech Team as well as other Westerville staff went to the Ohio Education Technology Conference. This year's theme was Artificial Intelligence and there were a number of speeches and sessions focused on how AI might transform the world of education. We learned a ton of cool stuff and are bringing the highlights (and accompanying resources) back to you! Below is a small sample of the hundreds of sessions that were held over three days. Take a look at any/all that interests you!<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><a href="https://tinyurl.com/yaknmqvt">Create a Self Organized Learning Environment!</a></b><br />
SOLE is a specific program that has some value, but there are a number of features of the program that can be applied to many different circumstances. The framework is useful for guiding inquiry based learning. Links in the presentation contain a number of resources including question stems for beginning and inquiry process.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://bit.ly/OETC19AddOns">Google Doc add ons for students and teachers</a>!</b><br />
There are tons of great add ons (mini programs that extend the functionality of Google docs) there are options that allow rubrics, voice grading, equation editing, block distractions, and a host of other options including some interesting surprises!<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://tinyurl.com/OETCsmart">Machine Learning with Google Explore and AI Experiments</a>!</b><br />
Google has a ton of experimental AI programs that can be applied to different classes. Many of these are also helping Google train their AI programs in how to recognize different inputs. For art and music teachers in particular, there are a ton of ways to create art or music from different interesting inputs (For example, creating music from how a painting looks) Other options are aimed at Universal Design for Learning and other accommodation that can make it much easier to reach students with particular needs such as real time closed captioning on Google Slides. Take a look at the hundreds of cool projects! The best part is they are open source and you can contribute your own if that is your inclination.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.clevercrazes.com/login_option/">Clever Crazes for Kids: FREE Steam-integrated K-8 Academic Enrichment</a>!</b><br />
This site was created by U.C. and Purdue. It consists of different games and challenges for kids that revolve around STEAM learning. (Science/tech/engineering/art/math) The kicker here is that kids can earn real prizes for what they do here. The materials are fun and engaging and can be a nice supplement for kids.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="https://www.infohio.org/oer/openspace">Open Space: Open Education Resources from InfOhio</a>!</b><br />
InfoOhio has created a site where they gather Open Education Resources. These are free, completely modifiable materials that operate under Creative Commons Licensing which means that you can change them, cut them up, use them, etc. as long as the original author is credited. They are curating the resources on this site. Looking for something new to get away from repetitive textbook exercises? Start here! (or ask your tech coach- its what we do!)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b><a href="https://futureready.org/">The Future Ready Framework</a>!</b><br />
Westerville signed on the Future Ready Framework awhile back and PD is ongoing about the different gears that make up the framework. All the gears are aimed at making sure students are...ready for the future<br />
<br />
<b>Smartphone Addiction!</b><br />
Smartphones allow us to access ways of connecting with people, succeeding, sharing stories, and getting positive feedback as much as we want. This has led to adults and students becoming addicted to smart devices. Some interesting statistics were shared regarding the lack of self control that many people feel they have over the phone usage. This reality gives us the opportunity to have productive discussions about how to guide students (and adults) into using phones for productive reasons, not just for entertainment and breaking cycles of addiction while maintaining the positive impact of technology. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kYLwXGmAsOk/XGbsugcCVMI/AAAAAAAAE38/0t4BGGelB70WJ6lSapDdpb1Mq_3ZRLNDACLcBGAs/s1600/tenor.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="202" data-original-width="350" height="184" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kYLwXGmAsOk/XGbsugcCVMI/AAAAAAAAE38/0t4BGGelB70WJ6lSapDdpb1Mq_3ZRLNDACLcBGAs/s320/tenor.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>General themes!</b><br />
<u>Universal Design for Learning </u><br />
is emerging as a new facet of education trends. Remember, the names are different, but the intent is the same. Give every student the best education possible using the tools we have available.<br />
<br />
<u>Applying Blended Learning in the classroom.</u><br />
A number of teachers presented on how they are applying using technology and other tools to personalize learning for their students (again, good teaching wrapped in a trendy title) They offered a great chance to see things in action across every grade level. Many teachers were also open to having visitors. If this is something you are interested in, let your tech coach know and we can talk more about how to implement this.<br />
<br />
<u>Tools, Tools, Tools</u><br />
In almost every session, presenters shared new and existing tools they use to improve the efficiency of their teaching and how their students access knowledge. There are far too many to list here, but we encourage you to think about things you have always wanted to do. Chances are that there are tools that will assist in doing that. Talking to your ed-tech coach or library media specialist is a great place to get started!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>Pizza can be improved?</b><br />
Apparently, it is possible to order a hot dog stuffed with pizza toppings with the bun created by...wait for it....a slice of pizza. According to all who tried it. This is a true game changer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ioSt49_TT4/XGbtOdomnmI/AAAAAAAAE4M/MTfYf1uxIrElSievrM_0p_LnnAOsmXWuACLcBGAs/s1600/mikeys-late-night-slice-03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1300" height="196" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ioSt49_TT4/XGbtOdomnmI/AAAAAAAAE4M/MTfYf1uxIrElSievrM_0p_LnnAOsmXWuACLcBGAs/s320/mikeys-late-night-slice-03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
this is just the tip of all the different things that we saw at OETC. If you want to improve instruction, try something new, or just hear more about what we saw, let your Ed-Tech coach know!</div>

<br />
I have had a few conversations lately with teachers who are telling me that kids are completing the work that has been assigned in Schoology but sometimes don't know when something is missing in PowerSchool. Kids are typically logging into Schoology (our learning management system, or LMS) daily, but have to make a separate effort to check the grade that is posted in PowerSchool (our student information system, or SIS).<br />
<br />
Now we've talked about making sure kids know how to log into PowerSchool to check their grade in the past (<a href="http://wcsohedtech.blogspot.com/2018/11/accessing-student-passwords.html" target="_blank">in November's blog post</a>) using the PowerSchool app [<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/powerschool-mobile/id973741088" target="_blank">iOS</a>/<a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.powerschool.portal" target="_blank">Android</a>], and kids should make a habit of this. But kids in our district use Schoology on a regular basis in class, and in doing so, are one click away from the <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201001903-Courses-Gradebook" target="_blank">Schoology grade book</a>.<br />

<br />
So what about those assignments that kids do outside of Schoology? Many teachers use a blended approach to teaching, which uses digital content as well as face to face conversations or work submitted on paper. Well, both of those grades can be recorded in Schoology, making it very easy for a student to get a more complete view of their total grade.<br />
<br />
By creating an assignment in Schoology, regardless if the completed work is to be submitted digitally, an assignment is then created in the Schoology grade book and added to the Schoology calendar. If a teacher grades that work and then records the scores in the Schoology grade book, students will see their posted grade alongside the other work that they are doing using the LMS. This essentially allows the student, the teacher, and even the parents to have a one-stop shop for checking on completed work and looking at scores. (In addition to seeing the school announcements, student groups, parent groups, and other features that Schoology offers.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sNAkmSg_hbk/XFmvm4cQ7EI/AAAAAAAABHQ/3kQJpikZ4xUsUThi5rZRwHaIWWhtc_mrACLcBGAs/s1600/333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="539" data-original-width="956" height="180" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sNAkmSg_hbk/XFmvm4cQ7EI/AAAAAAAABHQ/3kQJpikZ4xUsUThi5rZRwHaIWWhtc_mrACLcBGAs/s320/333.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Great question!</div>
<br />
When assignments intended to be completed on paper are created by the teacher, there is an option to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEjtEnp9LXo" target="_blank">turn off digital submissions</a> (or leave them on, if more submission options are desired). This still creates an assignment in the Schoology grade book but removes the "submit" button from the student view. The assignment is still posted in the <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201001693-How-Do-I-Use-the-Calendar-" target="_blank">Schoology calendar</a>, allowing parents and students to see the assignment <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201002083-Workload-Planning-Enterprise-Only-" target="_blank">workload</a>. (Side note: Schoology's calendar can be <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/203090336-How-Do-I-Link-My-Schoology-Calendar-to-a-Different-Calendar-" target="_blank">imported to Google Calendar</a> as well.) Anything assigned, digital or not, that is tagged with the state standards also allows for Schoology to calculate the <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201422866-Student-Mastery-Reporting-Enterprise-Only-" target="_blank">Mastery Level</a> and report that in Schoology for everyone to see. After teachers are done recording grades, they can use the <a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/203922048-PowerSchool-Implementation-and-Configuration-Guide-Enterprise-" target="_blank">Schoology Grade Sync</a> option to have all of those grades imported to PowerSchool for the official grade recording.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqfdEZYAMro/XFmsgEf2EMI/AAAAAAAABGw/blemN-3afPc7wfZORyRjk24LI5SX5_h4wCLcBGAs/s1600/1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="270" data-original-width="480" height="180" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqfdEZYAMro/XFmsgEf2EMI/AAAAAAAABGw/blemN-3afPc7wfZORyRjk24LI5SX5_h4wCLcBGAs/s320/1.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Teachers are continually asked to do more and more on a daily basis. Hopefully by streamlining the assignments that are created, and only posting scores in one place, and letting the computer do the rest of the work, teachers have a little more time to connect with students, discuss teaching and learning strategies with peers, and make the classroom a better place for everyone!<br />
<br />
There are a lot of links and ideas presented here. If you have any questions about any of them, or would just like to talk this process through with someone, don't hesitate to reach out to your district <a href="https://sites.google.com/westerville.k12.oh.us/wcsohedtech/about-wcsoh-ed-tech/wcsoh-ed-tech-department" target="_blank">Ed Tech Coach</a>!<br />

The goal of the project is to engage student in deeper, more meaningful learning. Project Based learning involves approaching learning through driving questions that often contain multiple curricular areas. Students research solutions, put together presentations, and present their findings to an authentic audience.<br />

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
The paperless math classroom is here!</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
I love to hear teachers discuss how they are using the technology that is becoming more readily available in their classroom. Innovative methods are being introduced to me daily, and it is really transforming the classroom to be more and more student-centered. Gone are the days where teachers shoot for the middle and any student who doesn't fit the mold has to just learn to catch up. More and more opportunities are being created for students to learn at their own pace and in a style that best fits their needs.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
With these ideas in mind, I introduce to you the "Paperless Math Classroom." Phil Pelzer, a math teacher at Westerville North High School, is using the technology tools available and creating an atmosphere of learning where kids can watch videos created specifically for his class, and complete course assignments and notes digitally. This allows them to be able to learn at their own pace, and in a way that organizes their course materials for them. Gone are the days of, "I lost the paper, can I have another one." </div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
Phil took some time to give us a glimpse into his classroom organizational structure. It uses Schoology, Google Slides, and Google Keep to allow the "paperwork" for his class to be done on the Chromebooks.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
If you have any questions about how this is done, how it is working, or just want to bounce some ideas about how this could look in your classroom, reach out to your <a href="https://sites.google.com/westerville.k12.oh.us/wcsohedtech/about-wcsoh-ed-tech/wcsoh-ed-tech-department" target="_blank">Ed Tech Coach</a>!</div>

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a> Each week it seems like there is a new app that we can use to increase student engagement, foster creativity, or increase student performance. Many of these apps can be very effective, but it can be cumbersome to keep track of what does what and how many logins you have to different programs and sites. It has been awhile since we took a look at some of the lesser known features of Schoology, but many of these apps and features are available within Schoology with the added bonus of having all your students signed in with no additional work required! Some more popular apps and their Schoology equivalents are below:<br />
<br />
<b>1: FlipGrid VS Discussions with Video Reflection</b><br />
Flip Grid allows you to create a grid of video based responses where students can make short reflections on their learning. In Schoology, it is possible to record video or audio clips as a method for any assignment or discussion. in order to do this, simply choose the microphone icon and follow the prompts to record.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxB4zrVw4qk/XBFgvdQaw4I/AAAAAAAAE18/I5pWc_HR70sXRjWTKj4uQj8fy5yARFm_ACLcBGAs/s1600/Sample%2B%2B%2BSchoology.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="299" data-original-width="1002" height="118" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxB4zrVw4qk/XBFgvdQaw4I/AAAAAAAAE18/I5pWc_HR70sXRjWTKj4uQj8fy5yARFm_ACLcBGAs/s400/Sample%2B%2B%2BSchoology.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<b>2. Poll Everywhere vs. Polls within Schoology</b><br />
Poll Everywhere is a popular app that show real time student responses. Schoology has a similar feature that is located within the updates tab on each course page. Create a poll and students can respond to your questions and see the summary of what responses were.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3177793564582653737&pli=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Obuk1hX7Pm0/XBFgtCTvOiI/AAAAAAAAE14/hpsllCLoPKceKr2Mr4TpmrtIy22nwT13gCLcBGAs/s1600/Farrell%2BModel%2BSchoology%2BCourse%2B%2BSection%2B1%2B%2B%2BSchoology.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="199" data-original-width="638" height="122" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Obuk1hX7Pm0/XBFgtCTvOiI/AAAAAAAAE14/hpsllCLoPKceKr2Mr4TpmrtIy22nwT13gCLcBGAs/s400/Farrell%2BModel%2BSchoology%2BCourse%2B%2BSection%2B1%2B%2B%2BSchoology.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>3. Student Websites vs Schoology Portfolios</b><br />
Many teachers use websites as a way for students to gather their work in a portfolio. Schoology has a built in portfolio feature that can be used as well. Click on your name in the top right of the screen and choose "my profile" in your profile, there is a tab labeled "portfolios". Here you can create pages and folders and even import assignments from Schoology.<br />
<img alt="Image result for schoology portfolio" height="257" src="https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/202555717/great_barrier_reef_portfolio.png" width="400" /><br />
<br />
There is a ton more that you can do within Schoology that emulates some of the more popular education apps. You can also add certain features like Khan Academy or other sites directly within Schoology. If you want to know more about consolidating the websites you use for teaching into one site, contact your friendly local Ed-Tech Coach!<br />

Kids learn differently. Teachers utilize different instructional practices. School districts have different resources available. All of these factors play into the learning of a student in a school. Here in the Westerville City Schools Educational Technology Department, we are hoping to help teachers reach their own goals of expanding their instructional practices to meet the needs of an ever-changing student population.<br />
<br />
Recently, the <a href="https://wosu.org/classroom/" target="_blank">WOSU Classroom</a> came to <a href="http://www.wcsoh.org/" target="_blank">Westerville</a> (and other surrounding districts) to explore how learning was taking place. Their hope is to help these districts create "personalized learning opportunities for educators on researched-based teaching strategies that have a profound effect on student success."<br />
<br />
In order to do this, they came into classrooms with cameras in hand in hopes to share a glimpse of what is happening in classrooms around central Ohio. They have created some short clips highlighting different instructional practices and posted them on their <a href="https://sites.google.com/wosupublicmedia.org/ohiolearninghub/home" target="_blank">Ohio Learning Hub</a> website.<br />
<br />

Each have different levels of network access. Make sure you are using the right one to meet your needs and avoid the panic when a site you swore worked yesterday no longer works by following the tips below!<br />
<div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="giphy-embed" frameborder="0" height="272" src="https://giphy.com/embed/p1qUMHkKiRRgk" width="480"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Guest</b>: This is designed for visitors to our district. Depending on where you access this network from, you may need to have a sponsor that can approve your accessing the network. This is also the most limited network. There are a large number of blocked websites. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Inet: </b>The Inet is the default setting for many of the Chromebooks and is most like what students have access to. It has a medium level of access to sites. If you are having trouble accessing certain websites or portions of websites (videos, images, etc.), this is a good place to look first in your troubleshooting. Many sites use larger hosts like Amazon or Google for their content and they will occasionally be blocked by this network. The login information for this network is programmed into the Chromebooks. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>WCS: </b>This network is tied to your login information, so it gives teachers more access to sites they may need. It is the least locked down of the websites and offers access to a number of sites that may not work on other networks. If you can access a site like Netflix to show a documentary or instructional video from your desktop, but not on a Chromebook, you are most likely not signed into WCS on the laptop. In order to sign in there are a few steps that you need to take. </div>
<div>
1. Go to the toolbar at the bottom of your screen and click on the clock at the bottom right</div>
<div>
<img alt="Image result for chromebook toolbar" src="https://hothardware.com/articleimages/Item2120/small_acer-c720-chromebook-desktop2.JPG" /></div>
<div>
2. Click on the WiFi symbol and choose WCS</div>
<div>
3. Fill in the login info...</div>
<div>
-You will need to do several things in order to do this:</div>
<div>
a. Change the EAP method from LEAP to PEAP. </div>
<div>
b. Type in your username (whatever your Google login is minus the @westerville.k12.oh.us</div>
<div>
c. Type in your password- the same that you use for Google login. </div>

"Hey teacher! Do you know my password for..."</h3>
<br />
We've heard it a hundred times. Kids forget their passwords or parents need to know how to access some of the digital products we offer. In Westerville, we have three main passwords that students and parents need to know in order to get access to most of their digital products.<br />
<br />
1. Google<br />
2. PowerSchool<br />
3. Schoology - parent access codes<br />
<br />
Often times I hear that students have gone to the office to ask a secretary or a counselor for their passwords. But teachers have access to these as well and are typically the best contact for a student or parents trying to be involved in the digital side of a student's education.<br />
<br />
All of the passwords listed above can be found in the PowerSchool Administrative portal. Teachers can access this by going to the <a href="http://www.wcsoh.org/" target="_blank">Westerville City Schools main website.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vof2Xhc3ONk/W-QzAhI0GmI/AAAAAAAAA_w/srM3px5_HBgSlyD6TJ9SPgSRlmVfaMwkwCLcBGAs/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="196" data-original-width="478" height="262" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vof2Xhc3ONk/W-QzAhI0GmI/AAAAAAAAA_w/srM3px5_HBgSlyD6TJ9SPgSRlmVfaMwkwCLcBGAs/s640/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">From there, teachers can sign in using their district username and password. <span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">District staff members with PowerSchool access can find these by searching for the student in PowerSchool, clicking on “</span><span style="font-style: italic; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Custom Screens</span><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">”, then clicking “</span><span style="font-style: italic; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Student at a Glance (Parent Permissions)</span><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">.” </span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><img height="400" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/KQw256ug2P4KyZpAaJ73nB4W2DVRixTD73Lnb7p1At1t8qChGEdQx8kvB1oWjiTLIXlbwgNnj9uWB9zCLFNlxq0JBZXFFb7K42yjJN_hOQJqGwj_fVmTt92Ru8CZzSl2m5plHYgM" style="border: none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="208" /> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><img height="425" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/kgDhuXQfwpDWIrFKc312uaLpIpc9ygGAu8wP-WuUzWpNTi2fSXqnosVQPolcmX7j__uXoSntc8uGxU9EoWqGZAfnr54JUgKEnKFFysidREzeilT3lhkS_3YSFi_TmlPjJ_FYvIqz" style="border: none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="640" /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The parent access code for Schoology is needed by parents if they would like to create their own Schoology account and connect it with their child. They will be able to see all of their student's classes and submitted work, connect with the classroom teacher, and check grades and comments. This only has to be done one time, as the courses they see will be updated yearly to reflect the student current course enrollment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Student Google account is what kids need to sign in to district desktops, Chromebooks, and their Google account at home. From there they can access other digital products the district owns independently or using the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxxlekot83hrUTJXSVl2VU1uRk0/view" target="_blank">Clever app</a> provided.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, the PowerSchool access ID and password is provided for students and parents to be able to access their official grades and schedule. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having access to these passwords can help a student save a lot of time by removing the need for them to attempt to get them from someone working in the front office. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PEbguAE-oZ8/W-Q3b2iKjeI/AAAAAAAABAQ/k47BNbD952oFN8PLAn3MlUCl2BtbXmrKgCLcBGAs/s1600/3.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="375" data-original-width="700" height="171" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PEbguAE-oZ8/W-Q3b2iKjeI/AAAAAAAABAQ/k47BNbD952oFN8PLAn3MlUCl2BtbXmrKgCLcBGAs/s320/3.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With power comes responsibility, so make sure that you are only giving passwords to approved people. Never email a password. Finally, please make sure you log out of websites that host passwords to ensure that people near your computer aren't able to access confidential information.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="https://safeshare.tv/youtube-for-kids" target="_blank"><img alt="Image result for safeshare.tv image" src="https://flippedlearning.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/SafeShare.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Our district has filtered access for middle and high school students to view approved YouTube videos while at school, but K-5 students are blocked from viewing them on their own. While there are many concerns and reasons why elementary kids should have a very limited access to all the material widely available on YouTube, there are also many educational topics that can be found on YouTube. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On the tech side, there are many ways in which YouTube videos can be embedded (in Schoology, on a Google Site, etc.) but those are still pulling the original video from YouTube, and therefore blocked with our filtering system. Teachers have been showing content rich YouTube videos to students as a whole class using a teacher account to access the material, but when offering specific videos to students to watch at their own convenience hasn't been possible.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Until now.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Safeshare.tv is a site that allows a teacher to find a specific YouTube video, enter the URL into the Safeshare.tv window, and safeshare tv will create an entirely new video solely using the video content from YouTube. This removes any ads, additional video bars, and teachers can even crop the video to focus on a specific part of the video that they wish their kids to view.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The video that is created no longer pulls from YouTube, and therefore is not blocked by our filters. Only teachers who have access to YouTube can pull videos to put into safeshare.tv, and then those links can be shared with students for them to view when appropriate.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Check out this <a href="https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5bd32583f2c83" target="_blank">tutorial video</a> on how to use Safeshare.tv, by watching a YouTube video that has been imported into Safeshare.tv! </div>

We get greater control over the content, but this often means grabbing video, audio, and text from a variety of sources. At the same time we know our students- the more clicking to get to content, the more issues will arise. It can be frustrating to have the perfect content available, but no easy way to get it to students without an unholy amalgamation of links, text and pictures. Enter the Embed Code. A handy way to get content on one page.<br />
<br />
Most web content creators and hosts like YouTube provide embed codes that allow users to insert direct, interactive links to content into their site. For example:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/i9SSOWORzw4/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i9SSOWORzw4?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The embed code allows you to bring multiple sources of content into one place. You can even embed a website into another website! They can look intimidating, but the process is much simpler than you might think. Follow the steps below to insert content into Schoology or other sites. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>How to Embed Content into another site</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Find the content you want to insert</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Many sites have either an embed button or a share button where you can find the code. If there is not one,<a href="https://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_iframe.asp">this site</a> has a way to do it through a process called the iframe. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. the code you embed will look something like this <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i9SSOWORzw4" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Wait! Don't be intimidated!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for don't be intimidated gif" src="https://media1.popsugar-assets.com/files/thumbor/gDA3LQnXgkzzOgIZpLE5GdPweBA/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2014/10/16/861/n/1922729/4cfbf11ba3672349_tumblr_miuaoobr9J1s3flqso1_500/i/She-afraid.gif" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The great part is that you don't have to understand how HTML code works or even what is inside the code to embed it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. copy the code</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Go to your Schoology page and access your assignment, page, or other place you want the content to appear and follow the steps in the picture below</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for embed in schoology" height="287" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QGHQXHgfWN4/WNhmZaSV21I/AAAAAAAAB1w/IFrZ0uDdveY4NOENwb-K1PjOcmmTYm2MACLcB/s400/embed%2Bin%2BSchoology.PNG" width="400" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now your content should appear! Schoology and other sites also play nicely with Google products like Drive and YouTube. The insert content button on many pages allows you to import embed code directly without having to follow the steps above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /><a href="https://support.schoology.com/hc/article_attachments/360008005734/Screen_Shot_2018-06-26_at_10.55.15_AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Image result for schoology insert content google" border="0" height="210" src="https://support.schoology.com/hc/article_attachments/360008005734/Screen_Shot_2018-06-26_at_10.55.15_AM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. If you are using a different site, the process is similar, you just need to find a way to switch to HTML view for a moment. Sites like Weebly, Blogger, and Word Press all have these options. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>A few tips</b>:- You can play with the width/height numbers in the code to adjust the size of the content you embed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-The Publish button (under file) in Google Slides, Docs, and Sheets can provide an embed code so you can directly link content into a page too (again, Schoology has easier ways of doing this through the Google Drive App, but for other sites it can be a useful tool.).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="about:invalid#zClosurez" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="save image" border="0" src="data:image/png;base64,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" /></a>-Many content creation sites like blogs, web design programs, and learning management systems have a button or menu choice to switch between HTML view and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) view. </div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for google takeout" height="128" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FWK4c6dCT6c/WO59cQtlW5I/AAAAAAAAJzw/dJOitjPFWo8BLPsdnSw7VxvLQBcfbzzRACLcB/s400/Google%2BTakeout.png" width="400" /></div>
Over the past years we've been creating, sharing, and learning using Google's G Suite of products (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.). These products have been an amazing tools in the educational setting. However, the products were all used using a Westerville Google account that was created and owned by the district. So what does someone do if they are leaving the district (i.e. graduation, retirement, etc.)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is where we introduce you to Google Takeout!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://brewsteracademyblogs.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/portada-google-takeout-720x360.jpg?w=720" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Image result for google takeout" border="0" height="200" src="https://brewsteracademyblogs.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/portada-google-takeout-720x360.jpg?w=720" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Google Takeout allows individuals to either download or transfer all of the content they own within G Suite so they can use that material with a different account outside of the Westerville domain.<br />
<br />
Google actually makes the process pretty easy. Just follow the steps they provide in their help center.<br />
<br />
If you are not sure if you will be using a personal Google account with this material later, use Google Takeout to download all of the content to be uploaded/converted into whatever product you will using later. This downloads an archive of all your material to be saved on an external storage device (i.e. flash drive). Once a new account has been created, these files can be uploaded and converted into that account's format. NOTE: some formatting may not stay consistent in the conversion.<br />
You can find Google Takeout <a href="https://takeout.google.com/" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for google takeout" height="336" src="https://www.bitrecover.com/img/google-takeout.png" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If you plan on using this content with a personal Google account later, use Google Transfer. This will simply take all of the material in the Westerville created account and transfer it to a personal Google account.<br />
You can find Google Transfer <a href="https://takeout.google.com/transfer?pli=1" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for google transfer" height="584" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/AIFg9ENwL-Ho-benPYsfHjb1OG8sBfqAw6JWjhSUoLpOK7swh6Qd4twBrJ90WniBWpf0N8GdJI34M8l2_8Zh7yJeRqe7PIjDrgA0Zl5EzMOsUY_G7NlUz-kSJlgi5kld-NC8i8I9" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Westerville Central's own Amy Farris has put together some amazing directions specific for Westerville students. You can read them <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gtUkPdVacuC19aXRmAV6hg_5R2s30TNmfYuvgum1930/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">HERE</a>!<br />
<br />
We hope this helps! If you have any questions or need some help, don't hesitate to reach out to your building's <a href="https://sites.google.com/westerville.k12.oh.us/wcsohedtech/about-wcsoh-ed-tech/wcsoh-ed-tech-department" target="_blank">Ed Tech Coach</a>!<br />
<br />
And if you are using either of these products, the WCS Ed Tech Department just wants to say...<br />

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Creating a communication system that is accessible to families, supports a wide variety of content, is easy for staff members to use, and doesn’t cost any extra money is a dream for many school leaders seeking to build stronger school-home connections. Pointview Elementary principal Sherry Birchem is one such leader. Sherry is in tune with the needs of her families and her staff and has worked diligently to build a strong sense of community in her building, including spearheading the effort to streamline school-home communication. After many trials, Sherry has found the system that fits the bill: Schoology. Through making use of Schoology's easy sign-up process, closed system for sharing images and video, and ability to send emails and text messages to families when updates are posted, Sherry is set to create a robust communication system that meets the needs of Pointview’s staff and families. </span></div>
